Membership states

There are 3 possible states for group members:

  • Active. The user is a group member with all the permissions allowed by their role
  • Pending. The user has no permissions in the group. This state is reserved for members who have requested membership but haven’t been approved.
  • Blocked. The user has no permissions in the group. This state is for former members who temporarily need their permissions suspended. It is also possible to remove a member from the group.

When users request membership to your group, they will show up in the members list, but their state (in the State column) will display as “Pending.” This will rarely happen, but is possible if a person is already a member of one group on the site and needs to join another.

To approve a new group member or block an existing one, you will need to change their membership state, or status.

  1. Go to the “Group” tab on your group homepage
  2. Click “People,”
  3. Select the users whose status you want to change
  4. Select “Modify Membership status” in the "Operations" dropdown list
  5. Click the “Execute” button.
  6. Select the appropriate state.
  7. Save the changes.

To completely remove an existing member from the group, do the following:

  1. Go to the “Group” tab on your group homepage
  2. Click “People,”
  3. Select the users whose status you want to change
  4. Select “Remove from Group” in the "Operations" dropdown list
  5. Click the “Execute” button.
  6. Select the appropriate state.
  7. Save the changes.
